Default Deleting a column from a binary table

Hi all,

does anybody know how to delete a table column from a fits binary
table
extension in a python script, under pyraf/stsdas/pyfits or whatever?
There don't seem to be any builtin functions.

Over at sci.astro.research, a CIAO call was suggested, but I can't
rely on CIAO being available.

Thanks,

Sebastian
