Default MATHEMATICS AND REALITY

MATHEMATICS AND REALITY
Copyright 1984 to 2005 Allen C. Goodrich

Newton's equation for gravitational force
F = Gm^2/L^2 is only true for particular values of L
, m and G.
And it provides the value of a force that does not exist
in the real world. Force of gravity is an illusion which
is created by the equation and which Newton assumed
to exist.
What does this tell us about mathematics and reality?
We must be very careful to define all of the terms of the
equation because it will be only these terms that are
related by the equation.
We must be very careful in drawing conclusions from
the equation, Equations represent reality only if they
are proven to be true by exhaustive experimentation
and experience. And then, only to the limit of our
present knowledge.
This is probably the most important lesson that
scientists and engineers must learn from experience.

How do you know it is an illusion?

Because he's not on the same planet as the rest of us.

I know that. But I still want to hear what he has to say.

Won't happen. "He" is a troll, or a bot, or something, which posts this
stuff and others regularly. PLANETS ORBIT THE SUN TO CONSERVE TOTAL
ENERGY THE FORCE OF GRAVITY IS AN ILLUSION is another subject line that
turns up regularly.

It's an automated message that has been getting posted
in slightly varying format since August 1996 (according
to Google). Whoever set it up never replies.

You're right; he must be a bot. I asked a question like that once in a
different forum, and I got a completely incoherent response. I thought it
was a crazy person, but now I like you 'bot explanation better. I didn't
know they had those things in here.

How do you suppose we might track it back to its source and crash it?

What's the point? It's harmless. Easy to kill file, if it annoys you.

1) It looks like a good challenge in digital B&E.

2) Do the other newbies a favor so they don't make the same mistake I did.

Who runs those things, anyhow?
