Garrity has an excellent introduction to the entire field in his 'Brief Summaries of Topics' - this includes;

Linear Algebra - linear transformations and vector spaces
Real Analaysis - limits, continuity, differentiation integration
Differentiating Vector Valued Functions - Inverse Function Theorem
Point Set Topology - Define a topology in terms of functions
Classical Stokes' Theorems - Calculus of vector fields
Differential Forms and Stokes' Theorem - manifolds
Geometry - how geometries arise from algebras
Complex Analysis - how a function can be analytic.
Countability and the Axiom of Choice -
Algebra - groups, the basic object of study.
Lebesgue Integration - Sets of measure zero
Fourier Analysis - Hilbert spaces.
Differential Equations -
Combinatorics and Probability Theory -
Algorithms -

Master these subjects and you won't need to defer to self-styled experts in figuring things out.
