Default mid 80's White Custom built C8

I've just come across a White tube C8 SCT in like new condition, for $1000
US.
Fork mounted setup. Built in the mid- 1980's. Includes original diagonals,
manuals, and a couple of period eyepieces.

The owner tells me that this was a limited custom Celestron build up. Looks
like it's never been used.

Anyone know anything about this particular model? Is $1000 a reasonable
asking price?

TIA,
F Marion

I think I remember Rod mentioning that some Celestron stuff that was sold to
the Aussies was white...

$1000 seems like a lot of money for mid 80s SCT when one sees LX-90's for
$1200.

Hi:

Assuming it hasn't been monkeyed with in some manner, sure is. For more info,
go to my website at the url below and take a look at my Used SCT Guide. I've
got a writeup in there on this very scope. If you've got any specific questions
not answered there, let me know.

I wouldn't call this "custom." Maybe semi-custom, whatever that means. :-)
Celestron made quite a few considering the relatively short period of time the
scope was on sale. At least 100 were sold to colleges, museums, etc., and no
doubt a similar number went to private individuals. The scope was never overly
popular, however. Why? Because it was always almost as expensive as a C10.

Fair price? 500 - 1000 dollars, with the low end being OTA only, and the high
end the complete setup in decent shape.

Hi Jon:

Ouch! I missed the "mid 80s" statement in his post. I thought he was referring
to the 60s Celestron-Pacific blue and white C8! I guess that when I see "white
tube" and "Celestron" my mind glazes over (pulse quickens, palms get sweaty,
etc., etc. :-)).

If this one is from the 80s, I'd guess that, yes, it was one of these
Australian scopes, maybe one that passed through Vixen's hands at some time
(they bought OEM scopes from Celestron, but liked 'em white).

In this case...500 - 600 maybe. If the optics are OK.

;-(

I got in touch with the seller and he told me that he bought it new from a
dealer in Boulder, Colorado in the mid 80's and that it was new in the box
when he got it, so I'm guessing that it never saw the shores of Australia.
Boulder is "far out" but not that far out;-)

He said that the dealer had told him that Celestron had made them to the
stores specs, and that it had a Byear(?) gear system installed instead of
the "standard" gear system.

I don't know if this makes any sense to anyone.

Thanks,
F Marion

Fortunately Rod got this one straightened out...

Hi:

Well, the fork mount Celestrons of the day all had Byers gear systems, but the
white paintjob would be unusual.

I'm inclined to believe Rod and Jon that the scope is nothing fancy, but
you might be able to track down the folks who originally sold it and see
if the story checks out (for what it's worth). The only serius scope
dealer in Boulder during that time was a store called Startracker (at
least I think that was the name). They fell off the map sometime in the
90s, but Cathy at S&S Optika in Denver (303) 789 - 1089 might know how
you can get in touch with the original owners.

Good luck - Chris
