The quick general answer is: Rule-of-Thumb is 20x to 30x per inch of aperture, but you can push this up to 80x per inch of aperture IF the seeing conditions and your optics are good enough. Since the Chinese refractors have only performed fair (middle of the road) when me and my buddies have used them, I would guess that you can't push then too much beyond the 30x per inch level. This would mean around 180x to 200x. And this is a general rule. |

I'm using a Celestron C5+ SCT with new coatings done at Celestron (in early June) for Mars; my impression is that the C5+ has excellent optics. One morning in June I was able to push to 300x (60x per inch) and get improved detail. Right now I'm at around 120-150x (highest I can go this am) and seeing the SPC and some markings in the middle of the planet (my first Mars experience is this year, so I really have not researched what I am seeing). Alas, if the sky does not cooperate, the best optics in the world (non-adaptive) will be of no use. Looks like Mars and the Moon will be close tomorrow morning. Basically, I am prepping for Aug and hoping for good conditions then. Phil |

hi
with an NPC filter and Pentax 10.5, mars in the CR150HD still doesnt look as sharp as in my alter 703, but for the money, the Synta 6 is the best big refractor deal going by far. some of the synta 6 achromats have really surprisingly excellent optics, but you need to filter the color. eyepiece quality is also very important. jc |
