H.L. Mencken on the US Presidency ... nailed it !!!
Look at this ... a 94 year-old prophecy is fulfilled.
H.L. Mencken (born 1880 - died 1956) was a journalist, satirist, critic and "old timey-type Democrat." He wrote the editorial below while working for the Baltimore Evening Sun, which appeared in the July 26, 1920 edition. "As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron." ---H.L. Mencken, the Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920 |

Mencken, the Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920 Lots and lots more of Mencken's political quotes... "A good politician is quite as unthinkable as an honest burglar." -- H.L. Mencken "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard." -- H.L. Mencken, A Little Book in C Major "Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under." -- H.L. Mencken "Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule -- and both commonly succeed, and are right." -- H.L. Mencken, Minority Report "Democracy is the art and science of running the circus from the monkey-cage." -- H.L. Mencken, A Mencken Chrestomathy "The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary." -- H.L. Mencken, In Defense Of Women "Every election is a sort of advance auction sale of stolen goods." -- H.L. Mencken "The state -- or, to make matters more concrete, the government -- consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get, and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time it is made good by looting 'A' to satisfy 'B'. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is a sort of advanced auction on stolen goods." -- H.L. Mencken |
