Default Comrades! Into the box!

Six Hero-Cosmonauts start their epic struggle against time, boredom, and
the temptation of sodomy to see if Mars can become a _Red_ Planet, as
the movie "Aelita" promised:

Ah, but you're out of date. The New Russia is still invading foreign
countries and chopping off bits of land from them... such as that
containing the Sudeten Russians in Georgia... but this is now being
done for Russian Nationalism, not Socialist Internationalism.

While they still seem somewhat cooperative, and are believed by many
to just be showing that they are a power to be reckoned with in their
own right... "gestures" that get innocent people killed in free
countries, I think, should be recognized for what they are.

Of course, when they do turn to open enmity, it will be a tactical
mistake to do so in the name of fascism rather than socialism, which
would allow them to appear to be motivated by positive ideals. The
Communists, after all, confused many.

But then, Islamic supremacists manage to confuse people without a
liberal face.

Things have gotten so bad in Kyrgyzstan, that they have actually
_invited_ the Russians to come back in the
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...sections_world
Reminding one of the "Romans ever done for us" scene out of "Life Of Brian":

Azat: "What had the Russians ever done for us? They bled us white, the
*******s. They'd taken everything we had, not just from us, from our
fathers and from our fathers' fathers."

Nurbek: "And from our fathers' fathers' fathers."

Azat: "Yes."

Nurbek: "And from our fathers' fathers' fathers' fathers."

Azat: "All right, Nurbek. Don't labor the point. And what did they ever
give us in return?"

Asan: "Hydroelectric dams?"

Azat: "Oh yeah, yeah they gave us those. Yeah. That's true."

Bakyt: "And the sanitation!"

Nurbek: "Oh yes... sanitation, Azat, you remember what the place used to
be like."

Azat: "All right, I'll grant you that the hydroelectric dams and the
sanitation are two things that the Russians had done..."

Kuban: "And the roads..."

Azat: "Well yes obviously the roads... the roads go without saying. But
apart from the hydroelectric dams, the sanitation and the roads..."

Sultan: "Collective farms..."

Other Voices: "Medicine... Education... Health..."

Azat: "Yes... all right, fair enough..."

Activist Near Front: "And the vodka..."

Kuban: "Oh yes! True!"

Asan: "Yeah. That's something we really missed when the Russians left,
Azat."

Nurbek: "And it's not safe to walk in the streets at night now."

Sultan: "Yes, they certainly knew how to keep order...(general
nodding)... let's face it, they were the only ones who could in a place
like this."

Azat: "All right... all right... but apart from better sanitation and
medicine and education and collective farms and public health and roads
and hydroelectric dams and vodka and public order... what did the
Russians ever do for us?"

Nurbek: "Brought peace between the ethnic groups!"

Azat: "What!? Oh... (scornfully) Peace, yes... shut up!" :-D

The Russians were under obligation by treaty (a treaty signed by them
and the Georgian government) to protect the people of South-Ossetia.
Had they not sent there army, you would probably be whining about
how the Russians don't fulfil their international obligations for
not doing what they where suppose to do.

On the liberation. Let's also not forget that Georgia attacked them
(whether provoked or not). In hindsight their response was rather
restrained. I can think of some western nations that wouldnt have
reacted so mildly. For example, if Cuba had launched an attack against
the US, would the US just anex some territory (ala the russians) or
completely destroy Cuba and its government.
