Great way to learn why light pollution is such an issue http://www.pbs.org/pov/citydark/ Cities are turning off more lights per building, but in Toronto, (for example) where you have literally dozens of new condo developments going up each month, the building exceeds the savings. Things they could do to eliminate the majority of light pollution and attendant waste: No more lights that shine any appreciable portion of their light up into the sky. No more 5000 light auto lots on all night, no more tennis court lights blazing in the dead of winter, shield ALL night lighting. Unfortunately, the lighting industry is using the energy savings of LED's and CFCs to push for even greater lighting at night, such as lighted sidewalks, road edges, etc. |

Dark skies at night
The almost complete absence of sensors for human presence is what is
most remarkable today. As is the lack of light sensitive "night and day" override switches on lights. Lights coming on is a great indicator of a new presence. Eve if it is only a stray pet. Lights staying on all day and night are completely ignored by everybody and must be monitored continuously for human presence. Over 50 years ago there were push button light timers on the landings of each floor of our apartment building. They were cased in brown Bakelite so may have been there long before we were. You'd think the lighting industry would have have evolved by now. Though there seems little chance of their ever dying out. ;-) Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rage at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. :-) |
