Default Help - Which Telescope?

Hi all,

I was hoping for a little feedback on this question...

I have managed to put some funds by to so that I can purchase a
reasonable/good OTA and mount, and I am having problems making a
decision.

I have decided that a GoTo (= 6") is what I want and with a budget
of approx £1,800 I have ended up with the following 2 options:

1) Celestron CPC 800 GPS (XLT)
2) Meade LX90 8" GPS Telescope UHTC

I have read many reviews and user comments about both of these but I
really do not have the experience to make an educated decision on
this. I am fairly new to astronomy as a hobby but I need something
that will grow with me, and for some time.

Thanks.

John,
As far as the manufacturer is concerned I think it is really
a question of "apples and oranges". I think you should reflect
on whether or not you will start doing electronic imaging in the
future.
If you are then an SCT is probably the most practical and
easiest to transport. If not I would consider a Newtonian. I say
this because there will come a time when a moderate aperture
has exhausted most of the objects you can reasonably observe
and there arises a need to want to *tinker* with your scope.
And a Newtonian is easy to tinker with ( fan, new focuser, light
shield, autocollimater etc.).
I have a 10" Meade Newtonian and one of my good friends
has a 10" Celestron GOTO and we have never entered into
disputations over which is superior.
But talk it up and consider carefully what could be in your
future.

Ben

I don't know about that combo, but the even beefier EQ6 Pro with a 10"
Skywatcher Explorer Newtonian can be had for under £1300 quid, and even
less than that to SPA members via some of their discount suppliers.

You really *don't* want to undermount an excellent OTA like the C9.25 on
an HEQ5 -- go for an HEQ6 at least.

Best,
Stephen
