I think their example is flawed. *One can argue -- and if I'm not mistaken -- Fowler _did_ argue -- that "between" is right here because there are relations between pairs of countries but no such thing as relations between/among the three, independent of the bilateral relations. But, from your quote I am sure that the OGtEU would have approved the original sentence as well. In the original sentence, I would have avoided the difficulty by saying "... project of NASA, ...". -- "The difference between the /almost right/ word and the /right/ word is ... the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * --Mark Twain "Between" is correct in this example, and Fowler DOES recommend its use. From memory - my Fowler is not at hand - he noted that "between" was acceptable in the case of three or more parties having some pact or arrangement, where each had formal agreements with every other member, on a one to one basis. Thus, the pact or whatever can be deconstructed to mean agreements between any two of the parties involved. This might not be a perfect solution, but Fowler notes that substituting "among" or "amongst" is worse, as that word denotes a general area somewhere in between the parties. So we would normally hear it in such contexts as "The ball was thrown amongst the players". It should not be used where explicit relationships are in force binding the parties individually and severally. Donna, where IZ YOU?! |
