For sale is a copy of "Lunar Bases and Space Activities of the 21st
Century", edited by Wendell W. Mendell, published by the Lunar and
Planetary Institute, Houston, 1985, paperback.
This book represents the conference proceedings of a NASA-sponsored,
public symposium hosted by the National Academy of Sciences and held
in Washington, DC, October 29-31, 1984. The compilation consists of a
total of 86 papers in 12 different categories, spanning from lunar
base concepts and transportation issues over lunar science and lunar
construction to societal issues, plus an epilogue in the from of a
fictional address by a lunar historian on the occasion of the
tricentennial celebration in 2076 written by well known science
fiction author Ben Bova.
Many of the papers provide a general overview of aspects associated
with lunar bases as well as more detailed information about a wide
variety of topics, such as lunar geology, lunar astronomy, oxygen
production and various lunar base design aspects like power
generation, thermal control and life support as well as many other
issues. Authors include such famous names like James Beggs, Edward
Teller, Gordon Woodcock, Paul Spudis, T. A. Heppenheimer, John
Logsdon, James Oberg, and Apollo astronaut Harrison Schmitt. The last
conference paper, "Lunar Industrialization and Settlement - Birth of
Polyglobal Civilization", which is the only paper in the category "A
Vision of Lunar Settlement", represents one of the last, if not the
final publication by Krafft Ehricke.
The wrap around cover painting in color showing a view of an advanced
lunar installation from an Apollo museum construction site was done by
famous space illustrator and artist Pat Rawlings.
The book has a total of 865 pages and is 7 ¼" x 9 ¼" tall and 1 ½"
thick. It includes black and white photographs, diagrams, drawings and
tables as well as formulas, literature references and an index.

to the soft cover and slight damage to the back and some shelf wear
soiling and smudging to the outside, but the text pages are generally
fine.
The price is $16.

Resources, Biosciences, and Space Engineering", edited by Barbara
Faughnan and Gregg Maryniak, published by the American Institute of
Aeronautics and Astronautics, Washington, DC, October 1987, hardcover,
no dust jacket.
This book represents the conference proceedings of the Eighth
Princeton/American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics/Space
Studies Institute Conference held at Princeton University, NJ, May

The compilation consists of a total of 51 papers in 9 different
categories, spanning from biomedical considerations and artificial
biospheres over social aspects for spaceflight and international and
economic considerations to space habitats, space manufacturing and

well as an introduction by Gerard K. O'Neill and a keynote address by
Apollo astronaut Donn Eisele. The papers address such diverse topics
as electromagnetic launchers, lunar bases, space commercialization,
laser propulsion and space law.
The full size cover painting in color showing a lunar landing vehicle
carrying a crew transfer module on descent to the lunar surface was
done by famous space illustrator and artist Paul Hudson.
The book has a total of 405 pages and is 8 ½" x 11 ¼" tall and 1"
