Default Super Bargain Astro Binos for Jon Isaacs and others ? The Inside Scoop - Sept. 20, 2003

Here is lively *possibility* as the best bargain found yet. It has
been somewhat reviewed as good by a user shown on link, and by a
friend of mine (see more below) and IS NOT from off eBay for those
that wish to trade elsewhere. Check this out (including the nice
pictures) it looks rather amazing!

http://simplest-shop.com/Whitetails,...a-product.html

My new friend Joe Sudek (from Astromart dealings) has used these and
commented the following in three emails before and after I informed
him the price had dropped bg FYI, all of his remarks are completely
unbaised!

"I came across a set of 10x50 WA Pentax at Walmart a
while back. Didn't know they were Pentax, stated " Whitetails
Unlimited* on
box. They were on clearance. Could not believe how sharp they were.
E-mailed the
website and they said Pentax made them."

[to me these look like Chinese low end yet decent class of binos I've
seen before]

"The best
10's I've had so far are the ones Pentax makes for "Whitetails
Unlimited".
Strangely enough there's no Pentax name on them. With 19mm eye relief
and 342ft. [that's 65° AFOV]
fov they can't be beat. You can purchase them at Amazon.com for $59
including
shipping. No drop off at the edges whatsoever [enthusiasm?]. Amazing
for the money. Might
pick up another set for all around use."

"Pete: Was shocked when I got [your] message on *Whitetails* for that
price. Normally
I would just write them off as another pair of cheap binocs. Believe
me when
I tell you that's like getting them for nothing at that price. Of
course the
12's [Visioner 12x60 binos] have them beat on magnification since
they've been reviewed at more than
12x [the Todd Gross review stating they are closer to 13x which is
correct] but edges are slightly sharper than [the] 12's. Can't
remember if there was any
color on coatings but do remember them being slightly darkened
somewhat. They
are FMC because Pentax makes them." [these are probably not FMC but
fully or combination ctd.]

So there you go, Jon (and everybody). Another potential "Super
Bargain Astro Bino" to ponder! Is this getting fun or what?

I am working on another hot prospect binocular as I speak! It is a
20x70 with multicoatings and wide 70° AFOV for $49.99!!!

More to come, stay tuned...

My wife's been looking for a bargain pair of binoculars for a student.
Now there's one on the way here thanks to Pete (who also gets the blame
for another pair or two I have). I'll compare them to the Bushnell
10x50 I bought directly from them a long time ago (top end at the time).

PSA:

Attention s.a.a. and astro newbies:

Do not, I repeat NOT, get sucked into the vortex of Pete's bino shopping
madness. I already own at least two pair of (excellent) binoculars due
to Pete's tireless efforts, and I don't want anyone else to be fooled by
his slick salesmanship, smooth delivery, and shameless bargain hunting.

[follows link] *Cough* Correction, make that three pair...

Thanks, Pete...you [redacted]!

What is supposed to be after 1-5 and before 02394 in the URL? I see a
space and of course that doesn't work.

Hi Mike,

Good to hear that. They are probably good and are "sounding" better
all the time. Will be nice to see what you *have* on them when you
get them in.

Here is the latest preliminary account emailed from friend Joe Sudek
that just received his latest two example pairs:

"Pete: Received my *Whitetails* today. Checked both out. Forgot how
sharp they
really are. Collimations excellent, No drop off on edges whatsover. As
far as
I can tell have a light bluish-purple tint on both ends. No doubt
sharpest
10's I've ever had."

If the 70° BSA 10x50 somehow doesn't pan out I think I'll spring for
some of these 65° Whitetails myself.

Clear skies,

Pete

I'll report in on them when I get a chance to check them out.

BTW, my wife also initiated another binocular purchase (to my chagrin,
without even consulting me on the use of binoculars for astronomy!).
Not for me but for a friend overseas who wanted to find a 20x80 for
$200. A friend had a gift certificate at a mail-order place that she
wasn't ever going to use so she gave it to my wife. $100 at an
electronics place! She saw that they had the Celestron Skymaster 25x100
on sale for $300 so she added the gift gift certificate to his $200 and
ordered them. I questioned if he wanted to have something that big but
he says that's fine. I tried them out and I'm pretty amazed at the
deal. I don't have a tripod handy for holding the things (they feel
like they're made from depleted uranium) but propping them on a fence I
was able to watch a few things bounce around a bit. They look good to
me, especially at the price. I've found one good review of them on
Cloudy Nights that matches what I find. Hmm, some day I may have some
of these in my own stable.

So I'd say this guy is getting the super big bino bargain of the week!
He lives in a place where one half of this binocular would be a very
nice scope for any amateur so he's going to be a big gun there!

Well, in an effort to maintain my #15 SAA poster standing: I ordered a pair of
the Celestron Skymaster 15x70's last week from Adorama through Amazon.com. $89
delivered, they are due to get here tomorrow. At 3 lbs, I am hoping that they
will work for hand holding. I have looked through a pair of the Burgess
variety, and I was pleased with what I saw (which happened to be M57) - Nice.

If they're anything like my much more expensive Oberwerk 15x70's, you'll be
very happy. Views of the Milky Way from a dark site are incredible.
