It also depends on the definition. There was the Japanese
chain-smoking journalist (what were they thinking?) and Helen Sharman.

Agreed. I have always found it a bit strange that the media defines
"Space tourist" as someone who payed their own way.

If you win a cruise (which is essentially what Sharman did) you are
still a tourist, right ?

The Japanese television network paid $28-million dollars for Tohiro
Akiyama to fly to Mir in 1990.

What does "Iranian-American" mean ?

While inside the USA, they may feel some obligation to hyphenate every
person's citizenship, if the person holds a US passport, he/she/it is
AMERICAN, period. This is especially true if she no longer holds Iranian citizenship.

In the past, NASA has refused to allow its telecom infrastructure to be
used by the guests/customers of the Russians. The temptation to wave
this rule for propaganda purposes may be big. But I suspect that she
will not participate in such political games.

However, since the Russians have normal relations with Iran, having them
establish a live link with some Iranian TV outlet wouldn't be a big
issue. And again, I feel she will be professional enough to not turn
this into a propaganda issue. (It remains to be seen if Iranian media
would be allowed to carry her message live or at all).

It means she was born in Iran, but has become a naturalized US
citizen.

Default Tehran News Service Plagiarizes Other Services

Am I just too islamophobic or is the official

Iranian 'Islamic Republic News Agency' (IRNA)

Moscow story on Ansari's selection merely a

rewrite of two other stories, from ARRL (the

American Radio Relay League -- see how IRNA's

story uses the crew radio call signs) snd from

Mainichi? Another chapter in 'Ali Babajob and

the Forty Thieves'? Read all the text to see how

every sentence in the IRNA story is stolen or

rewritten from these two wire services.

Iranian government story:

Iranian woman as next civilian space traveller

Moscow, Aug 22, IRNA // http://www.irna.ir/en/news/view/menu...5873115210.htm

A US-based Iranian businesswoman, Anoushe Ansari, will travel into space as the world's fourth space tourist, instead of Japan's Daisuke Enomoto who has been ruled unfit to make the trip into space.

ARRL story:

American Businesswoman Could Step In as Next Civilian Space Traveler

http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2006/08/21/100/?nc=1

NEWINGTON, CT, Aug 21, 2006 -- American businesswoman Anoushe Ansari may be the

eleventh-hour stand-in for Daisuke "Dice-K" Enomoto, 34, as the next civilian to

fly to the International Space Station.

Mainischi story

Japanese entrepreneur ruled unfit to travel into space

http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/nation...na005000c.html

MOSCOW -- Japanese entrepreneur Daisuke Enomoto, who was set to become the world's fourth space tourist, has been ruled unfit to travel into space, Russian Federal Space Agency officials said.... In an entry on his Web site dated on Monday, Enomoto wrote, "Twenty-four more days until space. Two days of training left. I went to the hospital for a CT scan, which they said was the last test."

Ah, that must explain all those African-Americans then.

Nope, that's different (unfortunately).

Don't forget the two congressmen that NASA sent up on the shuttle.

Trivia question:

How many U.S. Senators have been in space?

The answer, of course, depends on whether you mean they were Senators
when they were in space, or they are Senators now...

Either way, the answer is one. If you mean either, then two...

And if you want to talk ex-Senators (or future Senators...) it gets
even more complicated...
