Default Cameras for astrophotography

My husband has a telescope and wants to do astrophotography. I'd like to
surprise him with a digital camera. I know there are special cameras for
astrophotography but I want one that will also allow for regular
photography.

I'm looking for a digital SLR that will work with his telescope. I'm trying
to keep the cost below $1500.00. The recent issue of "Astronomy" had an
article about Canon's 10D camera. Can anyone tell me their experience with
the 10D . . . or experience/recommendations for other digital SLR's for
astrophotography.

Kathy,

The Canon EOS 300d (or digital Rebel in the US) is the cheaper
cousin of the 10D you cite below and is virtually identical to the 10D
and with a serious savings ($500) in price. These two particular cameras
are the kings of the astrophotography world when it comes to using
digicams. You will also need a t-ring and t-adapter which will permit
you to attach the camera to the telescope.

If you have a chance, join the digital_astro yahoo group where
you will find a very large and dedicated group of digicam users more
than willing to help out.

No way are they identical - my 10D is black and has 10D written on it
;-)

Only being silly, they are very similar indeed. I actually like the
interface layout better on the 300D/Rebel - the 10D's lcd info panel
being on the top of the camera isn't always convenient for astronomy
(IMHO).
