Default Great (Virtual) Space Battle Last Weekend

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23489293

BBC reports that over 4000 players engaged in a massive
online "space battle" this weekend, part of the game "Eve
Online". Hundreds of virtual spaceships blasted away at
each other for dominance of, well, something.

This has been the image since at least Flash Gordon
and Buck Rogers.

Wouldn't it be funny though if "space ships" turned out
to be hold-over thinking ... kinda like notions of going to
the moon on sailing ships or balloons or cannon shells
or, as in Cyrano de Bergerac's mid-1600s "Journey to
the Moon" ("L'Autre Monde: où les États et Empires
de la Lune"), levitated into space along with the dew ?

The top noodles in physics have been struggling against
the cosomological speed limit of 'c' for nearly a century
now and have had no success. Oh sure, all you need is
all the energy in the universe to prop open a wormhole
or a cup of mythical 'negative energy' to expand space
behind you ..... sorry, but them doggies don't hunt.
Something completely different is gonna be required if
you plan to have lunch on Betelgeuse VII tomorrow.

So, perhaps it is time to abandon the quaint notion of
"space SHIPS" entirely. No more Flash Gordons, no
more Capt. Kirks. If it IS possible to get around the
speed of light the solution likely to be seriously higher-
dimensional quantum ... closer to the 'Stargate' idea ...
where you are here, and then there, because in-between
is a sort of bad joke on us poor 3-dimensional folk.
