Replacement for cargo uplift is moving along nicely with SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft (first flight: early 2010) and Orbital Science's Taurus II rocket and Cygnus spacecraft (first flight: 2011.) Replacement for human transportation has been slowed by technical troubles and funding shortfalls. NASA plans to fly the first crew on Ares I with Orion in 2013, but a Presidential review board found that the replacement system is unlikely to be operational before 2017... two years after the Space Station is scheduled to be de-orbited. Performance shortfalls in Ares I have now greatly reduced the capability originally planned for Orion, dropping from 6 to 4 crew and ocean recovery instead of ground-landing, for example. Whether or not Ares I survives the next few months is very much an open question. SpaceX insists a crewed version of Dragon can be operational within three years, but the Review Board didn't believe that, either. Brian |
