Fun At The Cape
Hi folks, I'm posting from Florida, and just back last night from two days
at the Cape, seeing the exhibits there. It was a lot of fyn, and we did get to see most of it all. The only relative surprise was the ticket prices, about $53 US for it all, including one of the bus tours ( As in '92, we did the shuttle tour, this time, we did the then and now tour ). Turned out that said tickets were good for two days, though, a good thing indeed. So, from the rocket garden, the visitor's centre, the IMAX films ( We had just enough time to see both The Dream Is Alive, which I first saw on a day trp to Toronto for it in '85, and the ISS film, in 3-D, which really worked for it very well ), the Saturn V centre, with some very nifty views of the hardware, including the flown ASTP CM, and the unused CSM 119, and the presentation there was cool, with a full sized LM dropping out of the dark to a lunar scene, and the ascent stage lifting off from there. The busses don't stop at the VAB anymore, makes sense, what with security and that the Saturn V isn't outdoors right by it anymore, so no real call to make a stop, but the view as we pass by is excellent, and you can see all three OPFs, both crawlers, and one MLP. The stop at SLC-34 was quite moving, as was seeing the astronauts memorial wall, though on that one, it would be nice to add in the lost cosmonauts ( Not Geo's ones ! g ), too. It was great to really have the time to do the place up well, as in '92, she-who-was-to-be-my-ex and I had only about 5 hours available. And, it was rather satisfying to be able to answer the g/f's questions, along with a few from other folks. :-) One driving tip, if you're there, and headed towards Tampa: I-4, near Disney and west, mile 55-50, or so, had construction on it that made that five mile stretch take an hour to get through, last night. Both ways. Ugh. The weather was excellent. No rain, and comfy. Andre -- " I'm a man... But, I can change... If I have to... I guess. " The Man Prayer, Red Green. |

Turned out that said tickets were good for two days, though, a good thing indeed. The 2-day admission surprised me as well. A very Good Thing! How did you find out about that? IIRC there is no mention that a ticket is good for 2 days anywhere. I asked and found out, but they don't readily volunteer that information. There's no mention of it on the website either. So, from the rocket garden, the visitor's centre, the IMAX films ( We had Did you get a chance to see the putative "art gallery" in the IMAX building? I enjoyed that very much. The first day I was there KSC was a madhouse. Wall-to-wall people. Turns out that it was a special day for county residents to get in free or something. The "art gallery" was empty. Some very nice work there. The problem, I think, is that everyone's in a rush to see and do as much as possible so getting into a more relaxed art-viewing mode isn't easy. just enough time to see both The Dream Is Alive, which I first saw on a day trp to Toronto for it in '85, and the ISS film, in 3-D, which really worked for it very well ), the Saturn V centre, with some very nifty views of the hardware, including the flown ASTP CM, and the unused CSM 119, and the presentation there was cool, with a full sized LM dropping out of the dark to a lunar scene, and the ascent stage lifting off from there. I thought the LM dropping show was tacky. #1 on my list of things that should be eliminated. The busses don't stop at the VAB anymore, makes sense, what with security It's also a hazardous place. Fueled SRB segments are in there. That alone was enough reason to shut down the VAB to visitors. I remeber going in there years ago on a previous trip. and that the Saturn V isn't outdoors right by it anymore, so no real call to make a stop, but the view as we pass by is excellent, and you can see all three OPFs, both crawlers, and one MLP. Are they still painting one of the MLPs? snip rest -- bp Proud Member of the Human O-Ring Society Since 2003 |

No, because it requires payment for things that are of no interest. Scott I was asking the person who went. YES WE KNOW! that everything should be free and if theres not enough donations it should be left to rot or be hauled away Here we have someone who went and I wionder if they thought it was worth the money/ Two days is excellent because it really takes that long to see stuff When I was there the historic tour was a driver and guide on a bus holding perhaps 20 people max. Really nice guide and driver answered TONS of questions |

@FreeNet.Carleton.CA says... We had just enough time to see both The Dream Is Alive, which I first saw on a day trp to Toronto for it in '85 Are they still showing the faded and scratched print that I say about 7 years ago? and the ISS film, in 3-D, which really worked for it very well This is one of the very best "you are there" films I have ever seen. Better than anything done in CinemaScope, better than anything done in 70mm, better than anything done in OmniMAX or (2-D) IMAX. Gosh, it is even comparable to Cinerama. -- Kevin Willoughby lid Imagine that, a FROG ON-OFF switch, hardly the work for test pilots. -- Mike Collins |

When I was there, ~18 months ago, the bus stopped at the old S-V area, which served as a fenced-in tourist photo area for the VAB. Don't they do that, anymore? I doubt that it matters; the building is so huge that you lose all sense of scale, that close. I thought it was much more impressive at first site, while approaching on the causeway from the mainland.
