Galaxies are the same. |

That is why we know Andromeda will crash into us some day. The 2 galaxies are not going to "crash" into one another, like 2 cars in an accident. Essentially no stars in either galaxy are actually going to collide. Gravitational interactions will result in a single combined galaxy. The event is far more like a merger. |

Note that spacially, if stars were the size of common glass marbles, then they'd be seperated by hundreds or even thousands of miles ! Gravitational interactions will result in a single combined galaxy. The event is far more like a merger. There is still some powerful force binding all the stars and planets within the galaxy together into a single unit...that will act as a single unit... That unit can and will collide with us. I don't think it will be as bad as a car collision, but I am sure there will be some major changes in what once was two galaxies. |

The standard cosmological model, using just masses interacting by
gravity alone, and also taking account of relativity, fits all observations exactly. No stars are actually going to collide. A new combined galaxy will result out of the merger. |
