Default re-entry information

I note on the press release about the destructive return of the European
cargo vehicle, it mentions that there is equipment on board to record the
break up for research etc, and I wondered, if the thing is going to break
up, how they get their data back.. Is it like some glorified black box
recorder, and just how do you monitor the break up without breaking up the
devices used to monitor the break up, seems a bit impossible to me!
