At last years "All night Star Party" I got the chance to talk to some
senior BBC bod who opined that "Sky at Night" would be a fixture until
Sir Patrick retired - No-one in the BBC would DARE take his show off
until he no longer wanted to do it. However, he very pointedly didn't
make the corollary - that there WOUDLD'T be any "Sky at Night" as we
know it afterwards.

I'm sure that in amongst all the news recently of the BBC's "plan for the
future" where they have to justify the license fee, there was talk of
improving their public service broadcasts on the sides of documentaries and
so on, and not going for the "quick buck" with the likes of reality
tv/endless promotion of EastEnders and so on. So it might be safe...

He was taken poorly a week or so ago. I believe he's on the mend
though.

Patrick was taken ill with Heart trouble, he has undergone tests at a local
hospital and should be back on TV screens next month.

Cheers

An irreplaceable source of inspiration, inshAllah he'll be alright.
Astronomers live long... as an earlier thread pointed out.

Having seen in him on several Sky at Nights recently how about Brian
May?

From what I have heard over the years, I think if Patrick can't do 'The Sky
at Night' anymore, then that will be the end of the program.

Quite simply it's Patrick's baby without him it should be no more....

Cheers

I think Ronnie Barker should take over. He does Patrick down to a tee.

What an excellent idea! I think Professor May would be superb. Perhaps he
could redo the theme music as well!

Apparently Patrick suffered an extremely serious bout of food poisoning.
The following story is lifted from Ananova news (http://www.ananova.com/):

---

Salmonella - 'I nearly died'- Moore

Astronomer Sir Patrick Moore is recovering in hospital after a bout of
food poisoning that nearly killed him.

Sir Patrick, 81, who has presented the BBC's monthly Sky at Night
programme since 1957, was forced to miss his show on Sunday evening for
the first time because of the illness.

The bout of salmonella is thought to have come from a duck egg Sir Patrick
ate last Wednesday at his home in West Sussex.

He is being treated in St Richard's hospital in Chichester and is expected
to leave later this week.

"I very, very nearly died, it was quite awful," Sir Patrick told the
Independent newspaper.

"I can't be sure but I believe it was the egg I ate that evening. I
suddenly collapsed and was taken to hospital it was very serious indeed."

His friend John Fletcher said today that Sir Patrick would "definitely" be
back for the next edition of The Sky at Night.

He said: "He is on full recovery now. He contracted salmonella poisoning
last week and it made him very, very ill. He is well and truly on the road
to recovery now."

Sir Patrick, who received a knighthood three years ago, has also won a
BAFTA for services to television and is a member of the Royal Society.

He is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving
television presenter.

---

Best wishes to Patrick for a full and speedy recovery.

Dave.

Chris Lintott is his name and if you do a Google you'll find that he has
more than enough credentials to fill PM's shoes. I don't want to see PM
stop the same as many others but Chris (IMHO) could easily measure up to be
as good given the chance.

Chris strikes me as being as I remember PM in his early days. Fast talking
and excitable. A bit of mad professor about him. Sorry Chris if you happen
across this post! g. It's one reason why I find PM (and now Chris) a
pleasure to watch. Far better than some brainless tw@t who has their
questions written for them IMHO.
