in the 1 to 2 km range, and also quite irrelevant, given that the
object's brightness corresponded to a 50 meter object on the orbit
that produced the impact solution.

You're erroneously presupposing that it was a close call. In reality,
the object got no closer than 0.08 AU. The initial orbit computations
had significant uncertainty associated with them.
