I think in the astrophysics field, they have no way of knowing exactly
what the original source of the electromagnetic radiation was, they can
only guess. So they concentrate on the energy levels as the distinction
between gamma rays and x-rays.

The phrase "gamma ray" isn't a pop culture expression, being the name
given by Ernest Rutherford to the radiation he studied in his lab 100
years ago. Alpha, beta and gamma where all named by Rutherford, in
order of increasing range of action in his experiments.
