NASA EXTENDS SPACESUIT CONTRACT

NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston, will
exercise an option to extend the contract with Hamilton
Sundstrand Space Systems International, Inc. (HSSSI) of
Windsor Locks, Conn., for work on spacesuits used for
spacewalks. The "Option 3" on contract NAS 9-97150,
modification number 460, is valued at $26 million and is the
last of the available annual renewal options.

The contract, worth $333 million over six years, was awarded
through the competitive procurement process and was effective
Oct. 1, 1997. It included a four-year base effort and annual
renewal options for an additional three years, potentially
extending the period of performance to Sept. 30, 2004.

The work includes responsibility for the successful
performance of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), the
U.S. spacesuit used by spacewalkers; program and business
management and engineering; design, development,
certification, production and enhancement of the EMU and
other spacewalking-related hardware; assured EMU availability
program; field activities; safety; mission assurance; and
reliability and quality assurance programs. The contract work
is performed at JSC and at HSSSI's Windsor Locks facility.

NASA buys new ones, and the old ones go to Goodwill stores

They either extend it again or put it out to bids, the same way they
did with this contract. If they put it out to bid, they'll do so
before it expires. If there's any problem with the bidding process,
they can issue an emergency extension.

Standard gov't contracting procedure.
