Was in the hospital for a week. They pumped me full of antibiotics and cleaned me up both inside and out. Am now staying in a transitional housing room in downtown Portland courtesy of the local hospitals for benefit of the homeless. Getting free medical care at a downtown clinic. Medicare is now picking up the tabs so no more huge hospital bills to hang over my head..

Kim is still on the street, but I am buying her lunch once a week at a downtown food circus. When she gets enough for a MAX train ticket, she is very mobile.

First time I've been to the library for many months. Computers mostly available. The store nearby were I used to buy snacks has closed. Guess the rumors that it was moving were true after all.

I see some of you regulars are still posting here. Hi Bert!

Software has changed. Library may be limiting me to an hour now. Can't use Portland library because I have the wrong county library card so am at Cedar Mills.

At least my friends are not ZNR rednecks.

BTW, your NRA is still tops at culling humanity, especially with your fellow MRs(mental retards) plus anyone with social disorders packing sufficient heat to kill 100 of us per minute.

All you'll need to do is hide yourself from those billion plus hollow tipped FEMA bullets that are about to be flying every which way.

Hi Bert,

Glad to be back.

Sounds like your bladder might have been over stretched by all that beer drinking ****. They say my liver is a little enlarged, but still functioning normally.

I am posting today from the beautiful Tigard Library, where 3 hours of computer time are free of charge, in the Socialist paradise of Tigard, Oregon!

I am now staying at a motel just up the street from here on a place that is called Capitol Hill. It is crossed by a road called Capitol Highway, which I think may have originally wound its way to Salem.

Everything at the motel is third rate except for the television, since they have the full deluxe Comcast 1000 channel package! Having been TV starved for the past 7 years, this is great! Makes me forget the drab and shabby surroundings. It is owned by a couple apparently from India. But when his countrymen come here, compared to accommodations back home, they probably think it's the Ritz!

Well I can't keep paying motel rates for ever, so I have to keep looking for another place to live. But apartment landlords don't like it that I still owe my last landlord money. For a motel all you need is an ID, which I got last fall.

Best of luck, Bert.

Bert, I hope you operation is successful.

My experience in the hospital was a little different this time. Every time I go I am more amazed by the advances. They completely scanned my abdomen with an ultrasound wand. No need for MRI or X-rays.

The doctors made brief appearances, assured me I was in their care, and prescribed courses of treatment in godlike manner without even examining me. They were dressed to a T in perfectly starched clothes and gleaming white coats. They have learned that being well tailored gives them the same placebo power of healing as a medicine man's rattle!

The one doctor who paid me special attention was a beautiful young doctor named Rachel. She took care to set me up with the free place in downtown Portland for recuperation after I left. She patted me on the hand before I left, and it meant a lot.

Now I go to the Portland Oldtown Clinic 3 times a week and have a nurse, who has taken a shine to me, change the bandages on my legs which ere infected. She is a great conversationalist, and I have told her about some of my friends on Usenet.

I pretty much have a low cost laptop picked out to buy, but am still looking for a more permanent place to live. Hope I find a place with free WiFi.

Double-A

Stick close to a university or public center, and there should be something public funded that you can leach from.

Portland has some of the best used book stores, and those likely offer a WiFi service without charge. Most churches should offer something of a WiFi in exchange for contributing a few hours of your community services for handing out food and/or visiting with the elderly.

You should be able to teach a public class on using computers and the internet (most of the time spent fixing whatever they screwed up).

Walmart sells some really cheap computers for less then $200, and perhaps store display demos or as returned merchandise that's slightly surface damaged for as little as half that amount.

Target has a pretty good laptop for $300. I know of a lot of places around here with free WiFi.

The local Walmart banned me from their store on a false accusation of theft.. I had merely put my own cellphone back into my pocket as I walked out of the store. When I came back 8 hours later, they accused me of putting some of their merchandise into my packet. At that point there was no for me to disprove it. I asked them what they claimed I had stolen, and the couldn't tell me. They said they had been watching me. Walmart has notorious reputation for profiling people. I guess if you walk into their store looking raggedy, they just assume you are going to sooner or later steal something and keep looking for an excuse to kick you out.

Default Double-A Is Back!

A beautiful sunny spring day here. The Tigard library has high windows to let the light in. I am getting exercise walking back and forth to the transit center because the bus 76 that would take me on that leg of my trip always seems to be leaving right before I get to it, and I have little patience waiting for the next one. The bus takes a short cut I didn't used to know about that that makes the distance shorter.

Crossing Fanno Creek, the water looks clear and even fishable. But then I remember that Tigard dumps its sewage into it. Treated, but still sewage. That has been going on for many years. When was back in college, there used to by a sarcastic joke: "When the trout return to Fanno Creek."

The City of Portland had a water quality alert a few days ago: "Don't drink the water!" E. coli! I think I had already drunk some of the water the day before the warning, when it was already testing positive for E. coli, or got it in a Coke I drank from a soda fountain when I had my lunch with Kim. Because I did suffer a round of diarrhea! The problem as traced to the Mt. Tabor open reservoir. This was the same one a guy was caught taking a **** into about a month ago, and they already drained it then! The city is planning to cover its open reservoirs, but it is still in the planning stage.

An initiative was just voted down to take the water works away from the city and establish an independent public water district, but I'm not sure what was the motivation. From having worked at the city Water Bureau I knew that Portland's water rates were lower that what I was having to pay out in the suburbs to what was a public water district.

Hagar gets to pay $.1/gallon, and isn't allowed to water house lawns and plants.

Future city water rates in some of the worse drought areas could reach $1/gallon.

Portland sells its water by the hundred cubic foot unit. The sewerage charge is usually based on water consumption, but is at a higher rate! Customer service explains that it is because they have to process sewage, so it is more expensive than delivering water. The city adds chlorine and ammonia which are supposed to kill those bacteria. They don't add fluoride, but the water district to the west does.

Another nice day here. On my way walking from the transit center, I came upon a farmer's market in a church parking lot. Same old flimflam. Lots of fresh strawberries, yet I seem to recall that strawberries don't ripen around here for another couple of weeks. The large sized vegetables they sell look California grown. They just don't grow that big around here! At least they never did in my garden.

I walk past the Tigard City Hall on my way to the library. The area looks more rural than the center of a city, but with some industrial buildings scattered about.

I'm glad I get to come to this library now. The Internet computers sit mostly unused. Don't think my "luxury" motel has free WiFi, but I am enjoying the full cable channel access.

The motel seems to be doing lousy business. Looks like only a handful of long term residents like myself are staying there. This just aren't pulling people off the road to fill the units at night. There visibility is bad. A row of units in the back look nicer. I think it was added later. This at a time when every fleabag hotel in downtown Portland has no vacancy. At least here I have my own private toilet and shower.

When I was living in the ancient and decrepit Henry Building downtown, every once in a while someone would walk down the hall saying, "Living the dream!"
