Far less noise at that setting than the owl. Was it taken at a faster
setting?

Not less noise. Both at 400ASA. The Owl was cropped while the M8 was
full frame. The M8 1/4 reduction in image size reduces the appearance
of noise by averaging 16 pixels. No such reduction with the Owl
because ot its small size.

Averaging rather than binning as an astro ccd would do? I usually take
my shots binned 2x2 which takes the data from four 9 micron pixels and
adds them together as if they were one large 18 micron one. This better
matches my average seeing. Gain is reset as well. The result is much
like the scope running at f/5 rather than f/10 thus increasing the
signal to noise ratio and reducing exposure time by a factor of 4.
Averaging wouldn't decrease exposure time. I don't see how averaging
would have as much to offer as binning when dealing with long exposure
times. For daylight shots it would make sense as you already have
plenty of light. I'd think they'd switch to binning for long exposures
however. I'm just a beginner so probably overlooking something.

Robert,

Are you using dark frames? It would seem that going with say 2 minute
sub-exposures would be best. You can grab about 5 or so darks and average
them to reduce noise even further.
