Yes, all the electric car manufacturers lie about mileage. In real world
driving you always get somewhat less than they can get under ideal
conditions. Same is true of gas vehicles. The word is YMMV. I'm happy to get
80 - 90% of what is claimed and really don't expect more.

The vehicle that surprised me most was the Volt, which gets more than
advertised in spring, summer and fall, but winter is not so good.

Ditto the hybrids in winter, when battery efficiency is down. But
Toyota didn't lie about the mileage; 10 years ago they said 45mpg
overall and I get maybe 42 in the coldest of weather but up to 47-48
the rest of the year. I do suburban driving, the worst of all for these
cars, because one is constantly accelerating to 40 or 45 mph before
stopping again soon. In city traffic, where I rarely drive, one creeps
up to maybe 10-20 mph before the next light and fuel economy soars.

I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that

Same with the Volt - city driving below 45mph is the most efficient. Even with traffic lights everywhere. Costs me 1.8kwhr to go 10 miles, which is around 3 cents at night rates from the local Nuke plant.

hybrids, as well. The Prius design is really poor, with internal
combustion power directed to the wheels. A proper hybrid is an
electric car with a supplementary internal combustion engine to
produce electricity when necessary. I'd like my next car to either be
that, or pure electric (which would suit my needs even with the
current range limitations).

My Volt has a 350 mile range with a typical 7 gallon full tank and 45mile battery range. The car is always driven with the electric motor and the battery is charged with the 4 cylinder engine, I believe it's a 1.4 liter high efficiency design. The newest models get 50 - 55 miles out of the battery and have a more efficient, lighter gas engine.

Yes, the Volt seems like an excellent design. Just need an AWD
crossover version!

Get real. If you're a plumber (from plumbum, the Latin name for lead,
which was the only durable metal that was soft enough to be shaped into
pipes in ancient times) you are probably already driving a Bentley and
a Tesla.

I'll always remember the time I bought a new dishwasher and the seller
had a contract plumber come and install it. The plumber looked at the
dishwasher and said "Good choice. This is the same model I have on my
boat. Very quiet" "Wow. How big is your boat?" "64-feet. Gotta have a
dishwasher because we entertain a lot." "Exactly so."

Maybe his name was Christopher Plummer?

No, you don't NEED such a vehicle. You can LIVE somewhere else that has mass transit and walk-able neighborhoods. And if you were truly concerned about the environment, you would.

Do you have a vehicle? Why, if you don't need one?

This isn't about me, it's about you, peterson. It is rather hypocritical of you to even ask. You drive a 17 mpg vehicle 13,000 miles per year. That's seven tons of CO2 per year! The old saying about glass houses....

You WANT an SUV because you WANT to live in an area that you seem to think "requires" an SUV.

If you are concerned enough about the environment to WANT to impose a punitive gas tax on others then you should be concerned enough to WANT to live in a more practical, more Earth-friendly location.

Actually, no. I believe in natural rights and individual freedoms, unlike you and peterson.

He dictates what you need.

No, I only point out the hypocrisy of you, peterson and a few others. I don't really care what most people do, so long as they don't hypocritically criticize others.

And if you don't give him full fealty and obeisance, he will stalk you.

There has been no "stalking" on my part. All the info needed to know your real name is readily available right here on this newsgroup. It's not really surprising that you won't admit to who you are, though.

You act like a stalking sociopath. People do that when they want to
intimidate someone. Your words are here for everyone to see. For some reason
Peterson, ChrisB, Palsing, myself and a few others are on your ****list. You insert yourself in every thread and it always turns sour the minute you arrive.

Well, great, then my posts are having a useful effect.

What are you trying to accomplish?, whatever it is, it isn't working. You are
a disgrace to the conservative cause, in fact you turn off true conservatives.
And anyone else who might have contemplated becoming a conservative. And now
you are acting like a stalking sociopath. This thread started out as factual
about the coming of electric vehicles, and the moment you turned up we're off
in left field again. Real conservatives are kind, caring persons who are most
educated and can carry on an intelligent conversation without vindictiveness.

Clearly then, YOU are NOT a conservative, roland, real or otherwise.

I noticed that you remain silent as to who will be buying all of those electric VWs. Rather than "engaged discussion" you chose the "empty insult" as usual, roland.

We just believe in rights and freedoms... rationally derived, and
therefore far more defensible than anything with a source that can't
be identified.

IOW, you are a dictator, peterson, most likely of the fascist stripe.

I would suggest that the natural rights to life, liberty and property are quite defensible. You?

I'm just hoping for a good electric or plug-in hybrid 4WD/AWD SUV or
crossover before I need a new car. That Porsche is pretty, but I don't
think it's going to cut it on my roads (or even my driveway)!

SUVs are coming. Tesla has one in the works. VW has some 20 models, this is just one, there are others in SUV sizes.

Yeah, I know it won't be too long. But I have 300,000 miles on my
current vehicle. It's not going to keep on forever.

Then move to Denver, where everything is (or can be) within walking distance for you.

I don't want to live in Denver.

I don't blame you. How about NYC? They have good mass transit there.

I don't want to live anyplace that requires mass transit.

What you meant to say was "I don't want to use mass transit."

peterson, you do know that NYC has sidewalks? Do you have those on your street?
