Galactic Cannibalism: It's Not Just the GOP That Eats Their Young
John Steinberg:
... As for California, with Arianna Huffington (and ex), Gary Coleman, Larry Flynt, Arnold, a porn star, Herve Villechaize, Theodore Kaczynski and quite a few others on the slate, I'd like to take this opportunity to announce my own candidacy for Governor. ... And a sumo wrestler. OK, I'd vote for you. May I take this opportunity to remind the people that the last time they elected a two-bit actor to their governership, the end result was that 3-1/2 *trillion* dollars or more went missing from the U.S. Treasury? And that hatred was institutionalized as an American virtue? Sadly, the man who was responsible became demented on the afternoon of the inauguration of his worthy successor, and thus could not remember where the money went. Now I know that Californians are going to say "But that can't happen this time, because the two-bit actor in question is constitutionally ineligible to be president." May I further remind the good people of California that the incumbent is also constitutionally ineligible to be president due to the technicality that he lost the election? The Party of Nixon does not allow little things like the Constitution to stop it from achieving its goals. Davoud -- usenet *at* davidillig dawt com |

I'd have sent this by e-mail if you had had a real e-mail address in
your headers. The Party of Nixon does not allow little things like the Constitution to stop it from achieving its goals. This hardly qualifies as informed political discourse, not to mention being hugely off charter for SAA. You should read with understanding Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution. If Albert Gore, Jr. had won the election in Tennessee (it wasn't even close) this question would never have come up. But Gore followed the sterling example of George McGovern, who lost South Dakota to Nixon in 1972. It is a bad presidential candidate who loses his own state. Even Goldwater won Arizona in 1964. Unfortunately the Democratic Party selected a lousy candidate. Besides Gore's obvious shortcomings, had the party bosses read their history they would have known that vice presidents tend to do poorly as presidential candidates. Since the adoption of the 12th Amendment the only vice presidents to be elected president were Martin van Buren and George Bush. The other former vice presidents to win election either succeeded to the office of president on the death of a president (Theodore Roosevelt, Coolidge, Truman, Lyndon Johnson) or ran again later (Nixon). The qualities of a vice president, whose principle duty is to inquire after the health of the president (to paraphrase Peter Finley Dunne's Mr. Dooley) are not those of a president or even a good candidate for president. As John Nance Garner described the job, it isn't worth a pitcher of spit and vice presidential candidates usually are party figures that noone can quite figure out what else to do with them. |

And for the astronomers: "My head is in a place where the Sun don't
shine" It are! Except for infrequent peeks at the sun. This really should be a bumper sticker for our hobby. What a hoot!! john |

Davoud:
And that hatred was institutionalized as an American virtue? Cousin Ricky: More like a regression. In past America, hanging my ancestors from trees without due process was not considered a vice, and membership in the KKK was hardly an impediment to political office. The haters of 21st century America are increasingly marginalized. It remains to convince the Ray Guns, Bush Lites, and Ward Connerlys of America that although America finally recognizes that racism is wrong, that doesn't mean that she has purged it. Witting association with the white-supremacist and anti-semitic "Council of Concerned Citizens" has hardly impinged upon the reputations of Trent Lott and Bob Barr among their constituents. Marginalized is as marginalized does. It's still true that in a fairly wide region of the country, when people get together to talk business or other matters the ice-breaking joke starts with "Did you hear about the ******...". The only difference is that they no longer do that when persons from outside the region are in attendance. (Consider that America's top-ranking opponent of affirmative action is the very same person who appointed the two most powerful Negroes in American history. That's a strong indication to me that something other than hatred is at work here.) One of them is a right-wing freako-nutso with way too much power. The other has no power and has compromised himself by going along with schemes and lies that he surely doesn't believe in. May I further remind the good people of California that the incumbent is also constitutionally ineligible to be president due to the technicality that he lost the election? It stinks, but it's all legal. George Dubya Bush is my president. I don't like it one single little bit, but i accept it. In my opinion, if a person stole a sum of money and got away with it, then invested that money wisely and made a fortune through entirely legal investments, that person and her fortune would have no legitimacy. I would consider the entire fortune to be stolen. A court ruling that nothing could be done because of time -- the statute of limitations having expired in the above example -- wouldn't change anything. As for being anyone's presdient, Dubya is president if a puppet can be president. He's an amiable dunce, too dumb to know that he's dumb. The real power lies with his puppetmasters Cheney and Rumsfeld and the robber barons who, in turn, pull their strings. Davoud A President told us lies and a woman had to send her dress to the cleaners. Another President came along and told us lies and thousands of innocent people died. Bush won in the Electoral College and in the Courts. Get over it and live with
it. As to the popular vote, even a half-hearted check with the polls and the obituaries would show that any Democratic (which once was Democratic but turned totally Socialist) plurality was largely due to frequent voting by live and dead voters in large cities... Just an observation- Bush received only 8 percent of the African-American vote in 2000, the lowest level of black support for a Republican presidential candidate since Barry Goldwater ran in 1964. You have taken my post out of context. If you look back on your post and my response, you may decipher that I wasn't referring to the electorate, but to blacks in power such as the two you mentioned. In any case, I'm outta this thread now. I usually resist discussing anything but astronomy in this newsgroup- and I am resolved to do so again. Starry Skies, Rich |
