NYC EVENTS FOR MARCH 2007
--------------------------
John Pazmino
NYSkies

[part 1 of 2 parts]0

The following astronomy activities in the commuting ring enclosing
New York City are operated by various organizations. A few cultural
items of special importance to City astronomers may be included.
Altho NYC Events confirms the listed items, they are subject to
change by their sponsors. Check with their contacts. Let the sponsor
of an event you attend know that you learned of its event thru NYC
Events.
You may ask for the next NYC Events thru the NYSkies email
address, above, if you're not yet in the forum.
For events which missed NYC Events, check the NYSkies Yahoogroup
forum. Join NYSkies by sending email to 'nysky-subscribe @
yahoogroups.com'.
Hours from March 1 thru 10 are Eastern Standard Time. From March
11 to 31 they are Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Recall that daylight
savings time in 2007 inaugurates its new extended duration, from the
2nd Sunday of march thru the 1st Sunday of November.

Lunar eclipse and occultation
---------------------------
On the evening of match 3rd is a total lunar eclipse. MNoon rises
in umbra quite at sunset. You need a clear view to the east horizon. A
couple astronomy centers set up lunar eclipse watchs, but please ask
at your own local one for last minute arrangements.
During totailty the 5th magnitude star 59 leonis is occulted, an
uncommon feature of lunar eclipses. The ingress is in bright twilight;
egress, at night. The overall eclipse can be enjoyed with binoculars
but the occultation requires at least a small telescope.

General news
----------
July is a 'lean' month with so many astronomy centers in summer
recess. In some cases it's just tradition to knock off the events for the
summer, even tho there is no compelling reason to suspend them . For
example, the talks at SIBL on Manhattan ended in June, to resume in
September. The library and its staff operate all year round.
I adjusted the entries which recur on different days during the
month to lower the chance of missing them. For example, the Governors
Island tours are on every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I put a
distinct entry on the first instance of all three days.
Columbia University Observatory started this year running its
public starviewings thru the summer. In past years they ran only
during the school year. The July session is on the 20th.
The New York City Center for Space Science Education, noted in the
June 2007 NYC Events, stepped out for a while. It has no public
activities yet, but is considering them on the future. It is an
internal part of the NYC Dept of Education for visiting school groups.
Associated with the Center is a newly constructed Challenger
Learning Center, which as yet hasn't announced its activities. It
could, but not for sure, be similar to the upstate Lower Hudson
Challenger Learning Center, a member of NYC Events. When the two
centers offer public events, NYC Events will carry them.

Event news
--------
The 'Bodies' exhibit at South Street Seaport got an other
extension! It now runs thru September 3rd. The attendance is still
strong after about eight months run in the City!
I hear rumors that the humans are replaced every so often as they
'wear out'. Not that I believe this tale, but it seems that the pieces are rearranged from time to time. Anyway, 'Bodies' is there for you
to, uh, take in.
Please mind that while children get a reduced admission, they

really need careful adult advice for their visit. Be with them at all
times to intervene against upsetting reaction to the exhibit.
About 150 cityfolk, including astronomers, piled into the New York
Academy of Sciences on June 5th for a public briefing on plaNYC. It
was presented by the Office of the Mayor and Dept of Parks and
Recreation. Other sessions are scheduled thruout the City in the
months to come.
plaNYC (yes, there is only one 'n') is the manifesto issued by
Mayor Bloomberg on Earth Day, April 22nd, to move toward a greater
greener New York City. It is a dense read, along with several
supplementary reports, but read it you must. It contains proposals and
programs that affect every person in the City, astronomer and not
alike. On the whole, it is a good solid project, that banks off of
many green programs already in progress now.
What's crucial to appreciate is that plaNYC, while it has no
provision specificly for astronomy, will dramaticly improve the fate
and fortune of astronomy as a collateral spinoff. The cleaning of
brownfields and establishing new open space will provide safer and
more plentiful starviewing sites. The curbing of greenhouse emissions
will clean out the air, reduce smog, decrease haze and humidity, let
more starlight reach the ground. The expanded transit services will
make travel to astronomy events easier, quicker, more spontaneous. The
mantra for conserving electricity and removing excess outdoor lighting
will combat luminous graffiti.
This latter is an aspect that should be studied carefully by all
darksky advocates. Not that I like rubbing salt in your eyes, but New
York is the ONE place where large-scale abatement of light pollution
really works. It is HERE, in New York, that the campaign against
luminous graffiti WILL WIN. If you doubt this statement, come visit
the City in 2010, OK? Yes, we mean to make the starry night a tighter
integral feature of our cityscape, not as a dream for your children.
It will be the reality for your parents.
It devolves on the astronomer -- every where on Earth, not just in
the City -- to study plaNYC. It's yours for free as a download or
hardcopy thru 'www.nyc.gov/planyc2030'. For those blessed to be close
to the City, please attend upcoming public briefings.
Governors Island has a free public lecture series on Saturdays.
They cover nature, environment, urban affairs. It's the rare place
that offers a science or cultural lecture on a tree-filled breezy
island, with birds soaring and chirping, waves lapping the shore. OK,
it's not quite Tahiti, more like Camelot.
After the lecture, spread a blanket on the soft grass and graze on
your picnic. Between bites or sips, take in the vista of Manhattan
only a kilometer away.
The ferry ride is free, but you have to pick up a timed-ticket at
the depot. They are issued for the seating capacity of the boat to
avoid overcrowding. Note that I give you the 11:00 boat to allow time
to relax a bit and stroll to the talk, which begins at 12:30. You may
return to Manhattan on any boat, the last being at 17:30.

Sky news
------
The June 2007 NYC Events issued just when the Stonehenge sunset
occurs at end May. That's why I couldn't report on it then. What
happened? We got wonderful views from all over Manhattan's gridiron
streets. The next, and only other, chance this year is on July 8-11.
See entry for July 8th. As preparation, you may read the definitive
Manhattan Stonhenge article in the NYSkies Yahoogroup forum. It's at
\files\PazAstronomy\stone-ny.txt'.
gamma Virginis, now in southwest, is just barely separated in the
larger home telescopes. Recall that it was closed up during its
periastron in 2005. I got a free reports of the stars resolving into
two in larger telescopes and maybe in mid-size ones. If you can't get
the two stars apart during this year's apparition, you surely will in
next year's.
On July 1st, Venus and Saturn conjoin only about 1/2 degree apart.
They look like a double planet! Venus herself reaches maximum
illuminate area on July 12th, when the angular area of the bright
crescent part of her disc is greatest for this evening apparition.
'Maximum illuminated area', there being a couple variations in the
name, was promulgated by USNO in 2005. It replaced the older,
invalid, ediurnate 'greatest brilliancy'. This statistic is no longer
issued in the Astronomical Almanac, on which just about all celestial
diaries and calendars are based.
However!, many diaries/calendars STILL cite greatest brilliancy.
Some even assign a stellar magnitude to Venus! Making things more
interesting, the magnitude in various sources is erratic, from -3.5 to
-4.7!! I encountered this use while compiling my June 2007 issue of
SpaceWalk, the monthly starwatching column for the NYC Chapter of
National Space Society.
What's going on here? Some NYSkiers, catching this use of greatest
brilliancy, urged me to dig into this case. I am, with interesting,
but incomplete, findings. A full report will be posted in NYSkies.
Jupiter returned to the evening sky in late May in the southeast.
He stays with us all thru the summer and early fall. He 'pushes'
Saturn and Venus off into the west, where by late July they are lost in the twilight.
Jupiter in spring 2007 erupted into a round of upheaval in his
equatorial belts. Most home astronomers missed the start of this
episode because Jupiter was still in the poorly-watched morning sky.

NYSkies
-----
Astronomers are exploiting NYSkies as a quick, handy, friendly,
and potent source of astronomy news relating to the City. And there is
LOTS of astronomy stuff going on around New York! Since it revived on
28 September 2001 (it was interrupted by World Trade Center) NYSkies
became the definitive forum and public record for matters bearing on
home astronomy in and around New York.
Joining NYSkies is easy. Send an empty email to this /Yahoogroup
maillist at '. Its posts are sent to
you in your email and you post to it by email. It's that simple!
Or you may go to 'groups.yahoo.com/group/nysky'. If you are
already signed up with Yahoo, you go and sign in and then 'join'
NYSkies. If not, you have to go thru a silly 'registration' that's a
one shot chore, valid for all groups you may eventually join. The
files area of NYSkies are accessible only thru the website.
