Default Is this a phenomenon?

Last night, about 9.20 BST, i noticed another 'sun' setting. I believe it
was a reflection from the sun which had set below the horizon 20 minutes
before. Is there a name for this please?

I'm no expert on these matters and I'm sure someone will correct me
but there is an effect where you can get a Sun pillar after sunset. I
would guess that your second sun is a similar effect caused by having
only the top portion of the pillar visible.

There's a Sun pillar photo on my website - www.pbl33.co.uk, click on
the Mercury panel in the main window - the pillar is at the bottom of
the page.

Les Cowley's excellent site will undoubtably have more meaningful
information for you...

Hi Pete

I think you're right, it does look like a pillar. I thought it was
spectacular visually but not quite so good in a photo.

Another first for me.

I enjoy your site, you have some excellent images.

Regards

Martin A

Thanks Martin - nice of you to say so. I got a first tonight too - my
first image of an Iridium flare. I was trying to capture the ISS
through the scope. However, things didn't quite work out as planned
;-)

Iridium flare has been added to my recent images list (url in my
sig.).
