Where to watch a launch from Cape Canaveral

I'm going to be in the Cape Canaveral are at the end of Sept. and there
is a rocket launch planned for the time I'll be there. I'm wondering
if anyone can tell me the best place to go to watch the launch? If it
makes a difference, it is a nighttime launch.

The only launch around that time is a Delta-II from 17A, so I'd say
Jetty Park.

Definitely Jetty Park. Go all the way out onto the
jetty pier. Take a pair of binoculars, a radio,
a water bottle, some sunglasses, and patience.

I've watched night launches there, but I haven't
visited for a few years. There is usually a
parking type fee to get in to the park, which keeps
out those not willing to pay. I think there is also
a campground there.

The surrounding community is O.K., but Jetty is
adjacent to busy Port Canaveral, where cargo,
passenger, and fishing vessels jocky for position
with occasional nuke submarines, so you never know
what the next ship will bring in. No guarantees,
but if a launch is on, there will be plenty (maybe a
couple hundred or more) local and tourist
"birdwatchers" (launch observers) at Jetty. People
who take the trouble to watch space rocket launches
tend not to be criminals, at least not in my
experience! Now, I'm not sure about some of the
folks who post on this list!

Jetty is also a good place to watch seabirds (great
collection of Pelicans), scallop boats, fishermen,
etc. There is a nice sand beach there, complete
with a park building that has restrooms, etc., but
watch for sludgy waste oil balls from ships before you
sit on the sand! All in all Jetty is a nice place to
be while waiting out a countdown. With the launch
gantries in the background, it has a certain atmosphere
like no other seaport.
