Default Naked eye observing report: Venus/Jupiter Conjunction

I was pleased to find Venus for the first time during it's current evening
apparition at about 8:20 PM CDT Local time (13:20 UTC), close to the horizon
above nearby house roofs and treetops, street lamps and telephone wires, in
the last light of sunset. After a moment's looking and squinting, about
seven degrees to Venus' upper left, I made out a dimmer speck of light that
matched Jupiter's position. I hope our clear weather here in suburban
Chicago will continue into next week as the two planets draw to within less
than two degrees on September 1.

The local and regional light pollution has discouraged me from doing much
telescope astronomy in recent years, but sights like this make me feel like
I'm still an amateur astronomer.

Good on you. For us down south both venus and jupiter have been stunning
sights for a while in the evening. They are much higher in the evening sky
when south of the equator.
