Is there another planisphere sold that is larger than Sky and
Telescope's 16" dia. planisphere? I thought I had seen one somewhere but
don't recall where.

David H. Levy's Guide to the Stars a 16" Planisphere can be found on
Amazon.

Thanks, I had seen that one and wanted to be sure there were none larger
- looks like I'll buy that one, since a Google search didn't find one
larger.

There is Wil Tirion's new Firefly Deluxe planisphere, that is 15 inches
in diameter. I know, it's actually a bit smaller, but it looks pretty
good in pictures--better than Levy's (which I wasn't very impressed with
in person). I'll report back when I get it (I've ordered it from Amazon).

Thanks, I'd appreciate a note when it's received. I've also discovered
what weather event might be triggered other than after purchase of a new
scope (Which I'll pickup Thursday) - buy a new car, wait a few hours,
then look outside - it'll probably be snowing, as it is now in the
Baltimore, MD, USA area :-(

I, too, am not impressed with Levy's, and so will be interested in hearing
about the Firefly Deluxe. Levy's is big, but contains no more info than a
small one - just more spread out.

After looking at the 3 planispheres sold by Amazon, Tirion's doesn't
look useable outdoors under a red light and seems kind of "busy" for one
like me who needs a relatively "simple" skymap, outdoors, to re-learn
the sky after many years since I originally learned enough to find my
way without too much bumbling around. Only one side of Levy's offering
is a planisphere, as opposed to Chandler's, with N and S parts of the
sky on opposites sides, useable at night. Pending others' comments, so
far it looks to me like Chandler's may be the most useful for a new/old
"beginner".

By the way, I already have Chandler, and I think it is a delightful piece
of work. Clever idea. But I didn't think they had one in the 15-inch
class, that's all.

I looked at the pictures of Tirion's planisphere, and it should be usable
under a red light. It does look busy for a beginner, though. Sadly,
there seems to be some delay in shipping. Hopefully, it'll get here
before the holidays.

The Chandler version is the one I like the best of them all. Overall it's
9-3/4" square, is inexpensive, has "perspective correction" that none? of
the others have, and is available in three latitude versions. Others seem
too cumbersome, probably because they offer more 'features.'

My one complaint is that the center disc is made of paper (at least on
the version I have), rather than plastic as the surrounding mask is.
