Okay, I'll be still more precise: it's crazy to want to own and operate
one. If it's strictly a keepsake or a "gate guard", that's one thing.
But keeping it in flying condition is spectacularly expensive, and gives
you nothing in performance or glamor that you couldn't get from much
cheaper aircraft.

I've read that the WWII warbird folks do not like the folks who buy &
fly slightly newer jets [usually ~1960's USSR trainers, given that the
US won't sell their surplus to anyone {1} except friendly-at-the-moment
foreign governments...].

Seems after spending a million or so for a flyable Spitfire/P51 etc.
they resent something LOTS faster showing them up.

{1: Exception -- the T-38 that appears in Dragnet. My understanding is
the guy bought it for scrap from DRMO {DoD Surplus} figuring it had been
chopped to pieces per usual; but when he showed up to collect same, it
was intact [ooop!] so he got it out of there before they realized their
mistake.}
