Cash-strapped UK councils to ‘turn off the street lights’

quotes the Sunday Express today page 23 to save money on electric bills that have doubled in the last two years and are likely to rise even higher. About time too say I. Council in Essex, Gloucester and Somerset will roll out pilot schemes in the new year from midnight to 5AM. The article quotes the usual dirge about people being prisoners in their own homes, crime sprees and a return to the WWII backouts.

I don't know why they don't fit detectors so they only come on, for a
period, if somebody passes them. That would be a good compromise.
