The way I see it, the scientific elite have been forced to become
just another branch of the republican reelection committee.
Where the only scientific crime is failing to be loyal to
party policy.

It's a shame, there was a day when scientists, journalists
and the like could be counted on to be impartial to politics
and loyal to only the truth. That is becoming so hard to find
these days.

professional football or baseball teams that "threaten" to relocate to
another city/state that *will* build them a "state of the art" facility with
taxpayer dollars?

That should have been '[many|most] other such' - but you bring out an
important point; they don't fade away when they have substantive
public support and/or interest.
