New Crew Continues ISS Familiarization, Conducts Drill

Expedition 10 Commander Leroy Chiao and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov on
Thursday continued to familiarize themselves with the International Space
Station. They conducted an emergency evacuation drill that is mandatory for
a new crew. Expedition 10 took over Station operations Saturday when
Expedition 9 departed.

Chiao and Sharipov also took advantage of the standard one-hour session for
ISS familiarization. Each new crew receives an hour each day during the
first two weeks aboard the Station. Also, the crew reviewed procedures for
inspecting windows in the Russian segment.

On the science front, the crewmembers participated in the first session of a
Russian biomedical assessment. They recorded their body mass and calf volume
measurements for the experiment, which is studying changes to the body in
microgravity.

Chiao also changed a lens of the camera in the Destiny Laboratory Module
being used for the Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle School Students
(EarthKAM) experiment. EarthKAM allows students to use the Internet to
control a special digital camera in the ISS to photograph and examine Earth
from the crew's perspective.

On the ground, Expedition 9 Commander Gennady Padalka and NASA ISS Science
Officer Mike Fincke are in Star City, Russia, for several weeks of
post-flight debriefings and medical exams before returning to Houston in
mid-November.
