Is the earth's rotation powered from the inside out or the outside in,
...and how do we know?

Don
I'm still not the right one, but
The rotation is not powered by anything. You choose your words wrong. It's
an expression of the part of the earth's sum of energy that is currently
'situated' in the rotation. This energy may convert to another kind of
energy, but not without influencing the rotation (the initial 'calm'
climatic movement of air is exposed to an exchange of excess/deficient
energy due to traversing latitudes [coriolis], produce violent waves and
thus heat that may leave the planet as longwaved heat-radiation).... and
reduce the rotation of the planet. My intuition says, that this is a one way
process, and I'm sure that I'm backed up by general thermodynamic laws.
Moving the magnetic field of the earth through the solarwind of charged
particles may have similar consequences of reducing rotation. I have not met
suggestion of processes that works in reverse. But you have a suggestion?

Singe, oh Göttin, den Zorn des grimmigen (don findlay)

It is powered by a big hamster (species Megacricetus rotans) in the
interieur of the planet.

Nice

Yes, and the fish in the ocean cause tidal surges and waves ... yes! It's
true :-)
Just watch out, because now and then they all swim in the same direction!

It is powered by "conservation of angular momentum". You may recall that
Newton supplied "what is in motion, continues in motion until acted on by a
force"? This means that the Earth is a big (nearly) frictionless top, and
will continue spinning unless the hamster dies, I mean, until a force acts
on it to change its rotation.

Hi El. I didn't ask how it was powered, I asked from which direction.
Are you dyslexic, or just don't know the lingo like Stu?

Well if you put it that way, ...what was the force that started it
spinning, in this primordial dustcloud? And where, when it all
finished up, is the 'pivot' located? I mean given that it wobbles
and yowes...

Don,

Don't tease us :-). I suspect you have a thought about this
issue. Will you tell us what it is?

The dustcloud itself was spinning. And before that, the constituents of
the Milky Way were spinning. Likely it is turtles all the way down...

Given that the Earth is a thin veneer of crust over a liquid center, the
'pivot' is located at the rotational center of gravity. For some period of
time it has passed through/near the current geometric North and South
poles.
