As seems pretty normal, the craft bringing them back ended up on its side
and apparently four burly lads had to manhandle it to get at the hatch and
get the crew out.
I'd have thought by this stage, something more elegant could have been
invented, whether this is an inflated device on the craft or some kind of
wider legs on the bottom, I don't know but every time I hear about it it
just seems so antiquated.

Well kind of depends what you mean by not broken.

If there is no money for an upgrade, then it seems to me to be madness
launching their new lab module.

If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

That and many inside of the Russian space agency have been wanting a
Soyuz replacement for decades. Every few years, more studies are done,
mock-ups are built, and programs are canceled before they get started.
The fact is that there is simply no money for a Soyuz replacement.

Luckily, there has been some money to modernize some of the more
antiquated systems. The ISS program, in particular, kicked off a series
of upgrades.

"Antiquated" - this sounds like typical US propaganda popular with the
most impoverished layers of local population. "Undignified" - this is
something an exalted and well-manicured modern metro- or homo-sexual
would worry about. A rather strange mix.

In any case, neither the former nor the latter is something that
specialists in Russian space program waste their time considering. They
are not liberal arts students, you know.

Mr. Gaff is British. And his use of "undignified" sounds very, very
Birtish to me.
