Default Astronomers Want to Build A Forty Foot Space Telescope to Find theNext Earth

"With Pluto millions of miles behind us and construction of the James Webb Space
Telescope moving swiftly along, astronomers are already thinking about the Next
Big Mission. At the top of their wish list? A forty foot-wide orbital telescope
that'll search for proof of life beyond Earth."

"construction of the James Webb Space Telescope moving swiftly along"
That's kind of rich/revisionist isn't it?

It is not a question of half full or empty - the glass has a leak.
The real question is "Can it be patched?"
these opinions are mine, all mine; HPE might not want them anyway...
feel free to post, OR email to rick.jones2 in hpe.com but NOT BOTH...

probably better results by combining the data electronically from a group of smaller satellites some distance apart, making them equivalent to a much larger satellite.

Doesn't work quite as well as you might think, especially in the optical
range.

You really ultimately want the biggest bucket you can build.

And honestly, 40' wide... I think we can do better.
If we're going to build the next generation, we should go big or stay home.

We're building telescopes here on Earth with 30M or large diameters.
James Web is 6.5M.
