SpaceX launch and landing attempt scheduled for Sunday

For flights that have enough fuel margin this is true. But, Elon Musk has stated (on Twitter) that for the Falcon Heavy, they'll still need to use a barge to recover the core stage. It will fly higher, faster, and further downrange than Falcon 9's first stage. The Falcon Heavy boosters should be able to fly back to Landing Complex 1. Not only for Falcon Heavy, but from what I've read elsewhere there are also flight profiles of Falcon 9 that will require barge landing because there won't be enough reserve fuel for a RTLS landing. IIRC some of those involving GTO injections. Possibly payload mass as well. Noted the long burn time for the 2nd stage on this flight. Was it the longest SpaceX has performed so far? I'll have to do some fact checking... I suspect barge landing attempts will continue. But perhaps only on those profiles that require them? It will be interesting to follow... Dave |
