If the Sun was compressed down to the size of the Earth how fast would its rotational speed be? Bert Assuming no angular momentum was exchanged or changed in the process, the "compressed" sun would rotate 109.12 times faster than it does now, or about one revolution every 5.9989 hours. Oops, forgot to hit the square key. The sun would be rotating 11,907.8 times faster than it does now, so it would be rotating in about 3.3 *minutes* time. Pulsars usually rotate a lot faster than that. Is that because the stars they were produced from rotated more quickly? I know "our" sun is quite slow, and most of the angular momentum is in the planets. It is possible, although a larger portion of the effect is more likely the effect of the neutron star's very small radius (10 to 20 kilometers, rather than thousands). Clear skies to you. David Someday the sun will be a white dwarf, and it will be compressed
to the size of the Earth,so now we know how much faster it is spinning. Bert |

Could the sun last longer if its spinning was faster? Could we say the
sun spins slower than the average medium size star? I see photos of sun flares close to its north pole. Why is that? Do sun spots help to give us its rotation speed? They can't be the best relative reference frame(they are not stationary) Can the sun's flares effect Mercury? Bert |
