Ansari was the backup 'space tourist', and the prime guy (Enomoto)
was just medically disqualified. She can speak to people in Iran
with a 'voice from heaven' that the mullahs can't block -- what can she say?

Play "Space Card" Against Source of Islamic Terrorism
December 3, 2001 Space News, , page 19:
http://www.jamesoberg.com/122001spac...terrorism.html

In the culture war against the bin Laden religious fanatics, the West and
its Muslim allies have many unappreciated strengths. As the United States
launches new public relations campaigns to neutralize the cultural roots of
such fanaticism, one strong suit it needs to play to is the striking
metaphor of space exploration as a symbol of the future vs. the past.

What about the culture war against Christian religious fanatics right
here in the good old USA, Jim? A war on tourism will not defeat the
Christian fundumentalists, just as a war on terrorism will not defeat
the Muslim fundamentalists. A war on science will never defeat science.

Only science can prevail over religion, Jim.

Minor mistake in the article:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060821/...dc_1&printer=1

"Ansari will be the world's third space tourist. U.S. entrepreneur
Dennis Tito pioneered space tourism, flying to the ISS in April 2001.
He was followed by South African Mark Shuttleworth in April 2002."

Gregory Olsen was the third, in 2005. Thus Ansari would be the fourth.

The Japanese spent $28-million to send a journalist (Tohiro Akiyama) to
Mir in 1990.

Wouldn't Ansari be the fifth ride that Russia has sold to space (unless
they have sold others)?

It also depends on the definition. There was the Japanese
chain-smoking journalist (what were they thinking?) and Helen Sharman.

Agreed. I have always found it a bit strange that the media defines
"Space tourist" as someone who payed their own way.

If you win a cruise (which is essentially what Sharman did) you are
still a tourist, right ?

Yeah, I've been meaning to ask, "why don't they count as tourists?"

I hope they check you for brains. I suspect that the inspection will
come up negative.
