3 or 4 vane spider which one
Thank you, Ritesh, for confirming my choice of a 4 vane over a 3!
Howard Lester "Axel" wrote Is the 3 vane spider really superior on planets over the 4 vane? The benefit would be much less than, say, going to a smaller secondary mirror. But every little bit helps when looking for the low contrast features. FWIW, I have a Protostar 3-vane on my 8" Newt and under dark skies I still easily see six diffraction spikes on Jupiter and Saturn at low power, but they dim enough at high power to easily ignore. On bright stars like Vega the spikes are very bright at almost any power and kinda neat actually. Ritesh |

They're all compromises. Depends on what you want to compromise to best
match your specific set of personal viewing preferences. I long ago settled on the four vane spider as best meeting my specific needs. To each his/her own... -- To reply, remove the "z" if one appears in my address "Larry Brown" wrote in message ... FWIW A three vane spider gives six diffraction spikes and a four vane spider gives eight spikes--two are on top of each other so it looks like four, but they will be brighter than the six spikes from a three vane spider. I once saw a scope using thin piano wire--no spikes at all. Another good solution is to glue the secondary to an optically clear window. Expensive. The curved-vane spider seems to be the best compromise. L Brown Rich McMahon wrote: All Ive got an 8" newt that has a 4 vane spider in it now.. Im looking to get a new and more reliable secondary holder. I maybe in the market for a new spider.. Is the 3 vane spider really superior on planets over the 4 vane? Which spider and diagonal holder would you go with? Also is it worth getting the premium flats? Rich |
