The State University of New Jersey: "For the simplest derivation of the Doppler shift formula, we will examine the case where our observer is moving with velocity v towards a stationary source that generates waves with wavelength Lo. (...) When both the source and the observer are standing still, in time "t", a wave will traverse a distance of ct. If the wavelength of the signal (sound, water, light, etc.) is Lo, then the observer will see (or hear) "N" waves pass by, where N = ct/Lo. If however, the observer is moving toward the source at a speed of v, he will travel an additional distance of d = vt. This means that we would now encounter an additional number of waves: DeltaN = vt/Lo, for a total of DeltaN + N = N' waves."

In a time t the number of light waves which reach the moving observer are those in a distance N'Lo = (c + v)t. Accordingly, the speed of the light relative to the moving observer is:

c' = distance/time = (c + v)t/t = c + v,

in violation of Einstein's relativity.

This is called the Doppler shift, and for small relative velocity v it is easy to show that the frequency shifts from f to f(1+v/c) (it goes up heading toward you, down away from you). There are relativistic corrections, but these are negligible here.."

That is, if the frequency measured by a stationary observer is f=c/L (L is the wavelength), the frequency measured by an observer moving towards the light source with speed v is:

f' = f(1+v/c) = (c/L)(1+v/c) = (c+v)/L = c'/L

where c'=c+v is the (variable!) speed of the light waves relative to the moving observer:

Clearly the frequency shift from f to f'=(c+v)/L is caused by a shift in the speed of the light relative to the observer (from c to c'=c+v), in violation of special relativity.
