If they're the same as the Meade ones from last time around (as I
suspect they are) they cannot be beaten at that price

They certainly look identical to the Meade badged ones I bought from Lidl.
They were excellent value at £15 so £10 is a steal. There's a long thread
about them somewhere.

The Bresser brand is owned by Meade. If they're as good as the Bresser
microscope I got in Lidls earlier in the year then they would sell elsewhere
for three times the price.

They look *very* much like the ones manufactured by Kunming Optical, who
do Oberwerk, Strathspey, etc. At that price they are excellent VFM.
However, *do* be critical: outfits like Kunming use the customer as the
QC department. It is cheaper to merely accept for return any that are
unsatisfactory to the customer, and bin and replace them, than it is to
pay a QC department. At the very least, check that collimation is
acceptable.

If they are the ones I think they are, the star images should be
sharp-ish for the central half-diameter of the field of view.

Best,
Stephen

I picked up a pair at lunchtime today in the Burgess Hill Lidl to replace
my broken Pentax 10x50s. They are badged Meade, though some boxes name
them as Bressler. Plenty in stock. They seem excellent quality for only a
tenner.

Mine are badged Bresser. It's rather cloudy here but from what I've seen so
far in the gaps they seem very good value for money. They even have a
threaded mounting point which will be handy.

What I want to know is when are they going to have the 70mm scopes again?

...though it's a bit awkward, given that it's a horizontal mounting point
and will presumably need a special design of tripod mounting? Or is this
normal for binocs?

This is normal.
You can pickup an 'L-bracket' to make it easier to mount onto a normal tripod.

It's the only sort I have seen, though I'm sure there are some with mounts
on the bottom. There was a post I saw recently, maybe in this group, which
had a link to one of the optical stores who had quite a range of adaptors -
probably more than the bins though :-)

I'm thinking of a DIY bracket to use with a photographic tripod though I may
go the whole hog and fashion a parallelogram mounting.

Had another quick look outside late last night. Very pleased, the Pleiades
were stunning. These bins p*ss all over the last pair of cheap chinese ones
I got. Wish I'd got another pair now to keep in the car.

Perhaps when Asda grow tired of selling them? :-)

Seems the Asda one is only 60mm with just a very basic alt/az mount. The
Lidls one was 70mm with an apparently quite usuable equatorial mount.

Regards

Henry

Its normal - camera tripods work this way, you can easily get an
adaptor for a telescope tripod too.

For the cheaper option I would recommend thick garden string, and strapping
it tightly to a tripod, works quite well for the smaller budget

go the whole hog and fashion a parallelogram mounting.

It would certainly help with the crick-in-the-neck problem with binoculars.
I resorted to just lying on a blanket on the ground.
