That picture with the lander on Phobos is out of scale, but why did
they illustrate it like that?

Eh, not the first Russian Mars probe to fail to leave LEO. Mars 96 anyone?
(it left some nice Pu-238 in its wake as I recall.)

If Pat were still with us, I'm sure he'd say something witty about how
the Russians are cursed when it comes to Mars, and that we need to
remove the Russian instrument on Curiosity before it launches.

I'll second that thought - and add - was it just me or did the groups Pat
frequented seem to pause in shock for a while after he left us.

It wasn't just you, in phraseology Pat would appreciate:

On Usenet newsgroups, a pause or void, can be thought of as an informational
shock wave, noticeable only to those left behind and is the natural result
formed in the wake of a person passing beyond the speed-of-life.

It's Alive! Russia's Phobos-Grunt Probe Phones Home:

"The European Space Agency announced Wednesday (Nov. 23) a ground
station in Australia heard signals from Russia's marooned Phobos-Grunt
Mars mission, but prospects are fading for the probe to reach the Red
Planet as scheduled next year."
