I still like when Riker was banging the thing that was neither male nor
female.

Both, actually. With hints that race had been less androgynous at
one time.

Otherwise, the premise of Riker tossing his career and creating a major
diplomatic crisis for love while Troi just looked on seemed like very
poor writing.

But par for the Star Trek course.
