Ever wonder why you can't file your taxes directly to the IRS?
In 2007, Intuit lobbied to make sure taxpayers cannot file their tax
returns directly to the IRS by negotiating a deal that has the IRS promising not to set up its own Web portal for e-filing.[31] In 2009, the Los Angeles Times reported that Intuit spent nearly $2 million in political contributions to eliminate free online state tax filing for low income residents in California. -- LSMFT Simple job, assist the assistant of the physicist. |

This is disgraceful; in Canada, online income tax filing directly with Revenue Canada is possible without any means test or income test. One can even file by telephone with a voice-response system, but only if one's return is simple enough. I would have expected that the IRS would not be authorized by Congress to engage in any such agreements with a private business. However, the title exaggerates. I'm sure that Americans can still file their tax returns directly with the IRS the old-fashioned way, by sending their Form 1040s with attachments in the mail. John Savard |
