On a 1-10 scale of really dumb things to do, this is a solid 8:

Big, strong and dumb things that would make great slaves.

Aside from...I dunno, maybe Stalin...has anybody actually tried to do
this? What was the motivation for this MacKellar guy to suddenly jump
up one morning and say, "I'd better write a letter to the Department
of Health about humanzees!"

The story of governments attempting to make human-ape crosses has been
around since the 1960s, attributed to Stalin's people and to the
Chinese communist government in Cold War days. AFAIK, not a single
document has been produced to show it was ever a serious effort.

Not to say that you couldn't produce some great NFL linemen with a
little gorilla DNA.....
