Default ASTRO: Rosette in Ha/O3 from 400mm lens and ML8300

here is one more from the Microline ML8300 and the Pentax 6x7 400mm f/4
ED(IF) lens

I was planning to take a full set of sulfur, hydrogen and oxygen but the
conditions deteriorated last night by the time i finished the oxygen data so
I had to give up with only Ha and O3 in the can

I managed to get 11 x 10 minutes of decent Ha shots and 10 x 10 minutes of
decent [OIII].

the seeing was not so hot and got worse but the killer was the cloud cover
that moved in just past midnight :-(

anyway here is the Rosette in Ha / [OIII]

It is sort of OK, maybe you will like it

Short focal length but small pixels makes a good combination. How was
the color mapped? Red for Ha and OIII for green and a combination for
blue? Just guessing

Correct domain name is arvig and it is net not com. Prefix is correct.
Third character is a zero rather than a capital "Oh".

How could anyone not like that? Nice.

I am really liking how those 5.4 micron pixels of the KAF8300 as deployed in
the FLI Microline ML8300 are performing when used with that 400mm pentax ED
lens

as for your question on the color mapping, yes good guess: details here, see
page 18

http://www.narrowbandimaging.com/inc..._sky_flats.pdf

this is just applying physics to the problem: when you have ionized hydrogen
you get Halpha and Hbeta and Hgamma and Hdelta etc....

the Alpha and Beta lines are visible and occur in a strict ratio set by
quantum mechanical state transition probabilities: the transition leading to
Halpha occurs with 2.92 times the probability of the Beta transition.

So I add the "hbeta" line to the [OIII] to make a blue channel. the [OIII]
doublet straddles the Green/Blue region so that's why the [OIII] is added to
the blue as well.

here is a bit more on that technique of deconstructing and reassembling
emission nebulae apply simple physics principles

Nice one Richard, enough data for the Ha:OIII:OIII. I am too lazy to take
three narrow band channels anyway, so I like this approach even if was
forced by the weather.
